「玉子」と「卵」はどちらも「たまご」と読みますが、一般的に以下のような違いがあります。

- 生物学的な意味合いが強く、鳥類、魚類、昆虫類など、生き物が産むもの全般を指します。
- 孵化して子になるというニュアンスを含みます。
- 例：「鶏の卵」「魚の卵」「卵を産む」「卵がかえる」
- ◯ 玉子
- 食用としての鶏の卵を指すことが多いです。
- 特に調理された鶏卵に対して使われる傾向があります。
- 丸い形から「玉」の字が使われたと言われています。
- 例：「玉子焼き」「玉子丼」「厚焼き玉子」
ただし、この区別は厳密なものではなく、以下のような例外や曖昧な点もあります。 - 生の鶏卵を「玉子」と表記することも、調理された鶏卵を「卵」と表記することも間違いではありません（例：「ゆで卵」「温泉卵」）。
- 料理名では「玉子」が使われることが多いですが、レシピでは材料として「卵」と書かれることが多いです。
- 魚の卵は一般的に「魚卵（ぎょらん）」と表記し、「玉子」とは書きません（例：「いくら」「たらこ」）。
- 未熟な人や物事の始まりを指す場合は「卵」が使われます（例：「学者の卵」「台風の卵」）。
- このように、「卵」は広い意味で使われ、「玉子」は食用、特に調理された鶏卵を指すことが多いと覚えておくと良いでしょう。
